At the invitation of IPDAL, a delegation of diplomatic representatives from Latin American countries visited the port of Sines. The aim of the visit was to deepen knowledge about one of the most important port infrastructures in Europe. One of the topics discussed during the meeting was the widening of the Panama Canal, which, from 2014 onwards, will redesign all international maritime traffic, where the port of Sines assumes a strategic location, as Europe’s Atlantic Gateway. With just nine days in Lisbon, the Ambassador of Mexico, Benito Andión, was received by the President and Secretary General of IPDAL. Paulo Neves and Filipe Domingues presented the Institute’s activities to the new Head of Mission, who was accompanied by the Minister Counsellor, Jose Manuel Castañeda, and discussed future joint initiatives. The four representatives discussed aspects of national, European, Mexican and international politics. For around two years, Mexico’s diplomatic representation in Portugal was not headed by an Ambassador.
The President and Secretary General of IPDAL mediated contact with several large Portuguese companies, so that they could participate in a business meeting at the Embassy of Paraguay. This Wednesday, May 30th, the Ambassador of Paraguay, Luis Fretes, made a presentation on business opportunities at Expo Mariano Roque Alonso, the largest International Fair in the “Guarani nation”, and Paraguayan growth figures. Companies from various sectors attended the exhibition, from construction, energy, tourism and real estate. The President and Secretary General of IPDAL had a formal meeting, in Parliament, with the deputies of the Ibero-American Parliamentary Forum. Last Thursday, May 24th, the two representatives of the Institute had the opportunity to present the activities and objectives of IPDAL to the deputies, many of them members of the Parliamentary Friendship Groups with Latin American countries. In a session led by the coordinator of the Ibero-American Parliamentary Forum, Pedro Saraiva, the mutual commitment to organizing discussion and promotion sessions for Latin America in the Assembly of the Republic was expressed.

IPDAL hosted a dinner for the new Ambassador of Honduras in Portugal, Eleonora Ortez Williams. The ambassador is not resident in Lisbon (residing in Paris), she handed over the Letters of Credentials to the President of the Portuguese Republic on Wednesday, May 2nd, at the Palácio de Belém. That same day, in the evening, IPDAL distinguished the ambassador with an official dinner. The Secretary General of IPDAL was present at the Internationalization Day of the University of Coimbra, dedicated to Latin America. At the conference, Professor Fernando Taveira gave a historical retrospective of the role that the University of Coimbra had in the academic education of Brazil’s first political elites and, consequently, in the construction of the country itself. Certificates were also given to foreign students, scholarship holders of the University. The University of Coimbra is the university education institution in the world that receives the most Brazilian students.
