11 years after its foundation, IPDAL changes its image and now means “Institute for the Promotion of Latin America and the Caribbean”. During meetings held at the General Assembly, Management and Advisory Council, the change to the name, corporate image and corporate purpose of the Institute was approved. Pianist Polly Ferman was in Lisbon, at the invitation of the Institute, for a concert as part of Uruguay Week in Portugal. On the 6th of March, at the Ajuda National Palace, the concert in honor of the Centenary of Tango “La Cumparsita” took place, a work created by the Uruguayan musician Gerardo Matos Rodríguez. It was a recital with habaneras, milongas and tangos. The Institute supports the opening of the “Frida Miranda” exhibition, inspired by the iconography of two of the main Latin American artists of the 20th century. On March 8, 2017, Women’s Day, the opening of the original and unprecedented exhibition, by Portuguese artist Ana Mesquita, took place. The Secretary General of IPDAL met with the Caribbean Ambassadors in Brussels to prepare joint initiatives in Portugal. The meeting, which took place under the auspices and presence of the Executive Director of the EU-LAC Foundation, Ambassador Paola Amadei, took place at the Embassy of Guyana in Brussels. IPDAL organized a visit by Latin American ambassadors to Leiria, on February 17, 2017. The visit, organized in partnership with the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, the Business Association of the Leiria Region – NERLEI and the City Council, began with the reception of the ambassadors by the President of the municipality, in a welcome session during which the potential of the district and expressed a mutual interest in reinforcing various synergies with diplomatic representatives. The Secretary of State for Internationalization and Portuguese Communities, as well as the President of AICEP, attended the seminar “Economic Cycle in Latin America: Strategic Projects”. On January 25, 2017, IPDAL co-organized with BBVA bank an initiative to present, to large Portuguese companies, the main development projects of a group of Latin American countries. The President of the Institute participated in the Meeting organized by CAF – Development Bank of Latin America, at the London School of Economics. There were several topics at the conference, from China’s relations with Latin America to the consequences of the election of the new President of the United States on relations with Latin American countries. IPDAL maintains an extremely close relationship with CAF, which supports and participates in several of the Institute’s initiatives. The President and Secretary General of the Institute had a working dinner with the Ambassadors of Ecuador and Guatemala. On January 16th, IPDAL leaders presented the activity plan for 2017 to the two diplomats, who are accredited with the Government of Portugal but resident, respectively, in London and Paris. The dinner took place at Grémio Literário and focused on the Institute’s promotion strategy for these countries that do not have an embassy resident in Portugal.
