Paraguay’s National Day was celebrated on May 18th. Ambassador Luis Fretes Carreras and Senhora received several guests at the Tivoli Palace. IPDAL was represented by the Presidents of the Board and the Supervisory Board and by the Vice-President of the Board. In his speech, the Ambassador of Paraguay highlighted the relations between Portugal and his country and also the long history of Paraguay’s independence 199 years ago. Several Portuguese personalities and members of the Diplomatic Corps were present.

The Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs was in Portugal on May 14th. On the morning of that day he met with Portuguese personalities linked to the business world, banking and other sectors. IPDAL with the Chilean Embassy and the Autonomous University organized a meeting in Lisbon, on April 27th, “The Voice of Chile: art, literature and transformations in Today’s Chile”. The guests were 5 Chilean writers who spoke about their literary experience in Chile. In his speech, the President of IPDAL praised the Autonomous University for being open to civil society and discussion. Paulo Neves recalled the various joint initiatives between UAL and IPDAL.
On April 29th, IPDAL participated in a Conference at the University of Coimbra on Cooperation with Latin America, “Ibero-American Community. Relations between Portugal and Latin America”. The President of the Supervisory Board, Antonieta Kruguer, attended the conference and was invited to lunch with the Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra.
A SATA Internacional plane took off on April 12th from Lisbon with more than two tons of humanitarian aid material. Medicines and other goods are on board SATA’s Airbus A310 to help a population badly affected by the January earthquake in Haiti. Shortly after the catastrophe, the airline made itself available to collaborate with Portuguese humanitarian organizations in Haiti through its weekly flight to the Dominican Republic (a country bordering Haiti), in which it provided space for the transport of humanitarian aid material. The Assembly of the Republic, through the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, organized on April 14th the Colloquium “Chile: political change, reconstruction after the earthquake” with the presence of Ambassador Fernando Ayala and the President of the Parliamentary Business Committee Foreigners, José Ribeiro and Castro. IPDAL was represented by Secretary General Alexandre Barata and its President of the Supervisory Board, Maria Antonieta Kruguer.
The Presidents of the IPDAL board, Paulo Neves, and the President of the Advisory Council, Minerva Lara Batista, were present on April 14th, in Lisbon, at a Colloquium organized by the Ministry of Finance and CAF – the Andean Development Community -. CAF President Enrique Garcia presented CAF to a group of Portuguese personalities. Also present was the President of AICEP, Basílio Horta, who praised CAF’s role in the development of Latin America.
The development of contacts with Alentejo companies, for future business, and a greater knowledge of the tourist and cultural potential of Alentejo were the objectives of the visit of Latin American ambassadors to the region. The visit, promoted by the Institute for the Promotion and Development of Latin America (IPDAL), in partnership with Turismo do Alentejo, began on Saturday and ended on Monday, in Évora, with meetings between the ambassadors and various local entities.
