The Order of Engineers and the Institute for the Promotion and Development of Latin America (IPDAL) presented the Forum “Business opportunities in Latin America – Investments in the Construction sector”, during a lunch with all the Ambassadors of Latin America in Portugal. The Forum will take place in Lisbon on April 27th. Representatives of the main Portuguese civil construction, public works, projects and construction materials companies will attend. The President of IPDAL was invited and participated, in Madrid, in the ABC International Conference “Europe and America, before the exchanges”. The conference took place on February 23rd, at the Ritz Hotel in the Spanish capital. The inaugural conference was given by European Commissioner Joaquín Almunia and the Vice-President of the Spanish government, Pedro Solbes was the Speaker at the Lunch. Paulo Neves participated in the panel “Strengths and weaknesses of Latin America in the face of the crisis”. Bankers, managers and diplomats with interests in Latin America participated in this Conference.
The President of IPDAL (Institute for the Promotion and Development of Latin America) met with the new Spanish Ambassador to Portugal, Alberto Navarro. The meeting took place at the Spanish Embassy in Lisbon and served as an opportunity for the President of IPDAL to present the Institute. At the end, Paulo Neves stated that “the Institute will continue to rely on the Spanish Embassy. The new ambassador conveyed his enthusiasm for our initiatives and objectives”. The meeting took place on February 16th.
The President of IPDAL participated, at the invitation of the president of the Portuguese-Spanish Chamber of Commerce, Enrique Santos, in the lunch that took place on the 16th of February. The speaker at this lunch was former President of the Republic Dr. Jorge Sampaio.
The Ambassador of Mexico in Portugal brought together institutional leaders and businesspeople in a meeting where he presented the great business opportunities in Mexico, due to the Public Works Plan presented by the Mexican government. Ambassador Mauricio Toussaint spoke about trade relations between Portugal and Mexico, which have seen a notable increase in recent years, and about Mexican macroeconomic projections. Portucel is interested in investing in Latin America in the development of a forestry enterprise. The news, released by the Ministry of Transport and Public Works of Uruguay, reveals that Manuel Regalado, CFO of the Portuguese company, met with Minister Víctor Rossi this week. The person in charge informed the company’s interest in building a factory in the region and added that it could be located in Uruguay. Trade between Brazil and Portugal grew 10.17% in the first half of this year, compared to the same period in 2006, to 955.2 million dollars, according to data from the Brazilian government. Latin American economies will experience a slowdown over the next two years, especially due to lower expansion capacity in Argentina and Venezuela, while Brazil should maintain a practically stable performance, the World Bank (WB) said today. In its annual report on world economic forecasts, the institution stated that the region will end this year with growth of 5%, two tenths above what was predicted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in September.
