IPDAL PRESENTS CAF ECONOMY AND DEVELOPMENT REPORT 2021

IPDAL presented, on September 12, in Portugal, the 2021 Economy and Development Report of CAF – Development Bank of Latin America to an audience of Latin American ambassadors, business leaders, Portuguese authorities and academics.

Since the 1990s, Latin America has seen a series of commercial treaties and trade liberalization policies signed without, however, producing a sustained and significant increase in intra-regional trade. Other regional economic blocs achieved better results by applying the same formula, which leads to the question of why these policies do not work in Latin America.

The 2021 Economy and Development Report argues that the weak international insertion of Latin American companies is due to the poor use of regional space as part of a strategy to increase exports. As a solution, three areas of work are indicated: facilitating trade, increasing and improving physical infrastructure and developing productive integration.

After the opening of the initiative by Filipe Domingues, Secretary General of IPDAL, and Ignacio Corlazzoli, Director for Europe, Asia and the Middle East of CAF, Principal Economist for Socioeconomic Research Lian Allub presented the report.

A panel discussion followed where Ambassador Hermann Aschentrupp of Mexico, Professor Nancy Gomes, Dr. Mattia Barbera and Dr. Luís Rebelo de Sousa, Advisor to the Board of Directors of AICEP, were able to debate the state of economic integration in Latin America under the moderation of Ernesto Schargrodsky, Director of Socioeconomic Research at the Development Bank of Latin America.
