Argentine historian Ignacio F. Bracht was the special guest of the initiative “From the ABC Pact to Mercosul”.
The conference organized by the Embassy of Argentina and the Institute focused on the challenges and opportunities of the commercial alliance, which brings together Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela, in the face of increasingly questioned globalization.
On June 14, the Argentine academic spoke about the military tension experienced in South America at the beginning of the 20th century, which would give rise to the peace and cooperation agreement between Argentina, Brazil and Chile – the ABC Pact – as an attempt to create a regional bloc. He also explained the phenomenon of political and economic evolution that later gave rise to treaties such as Mercosur, Pacific Alliance, Unasur and ALBA.
At Grémio Literário, an attempt was made to understand how these integration mechanisms could be vehicles for establishing possible cooperation agreements with other regional organizations such as the European Union and for confronting the reappearance of isolationism and protectionism in times when regionalization and globalization are called into question.
