CHILE MNE PARTICIPATES IN IPDAL INITIATIVE

Andrés Allamand was the Guest of Honor at the VI Ibero-American Meeting in Cascais.

The initiative managed to bring together representatives from governments, investment agencies and some of the largest companies in Portugal, Spain and Chile. The Latin American country was the guest of this sixth edition, which aimed to promote economic relations between the main Ibero-American actors.

On October 28th, a working lunch brought together the participants of the Meeting with the Mayor of Cascais, Carlos Carreiras. Then, the secretary general ad interim SEGIB challenged governments and companies to invest in a sustainable, resilient and inclusive recovery in order to face the pandemic that hit Latin America with particular violence.

The first round table brought together the president of COSEC, Maria Celeste Hagatong, and the Undersecretary for Foreign Economic Relations of Chile, Rodrigo Yañez.

The second roundtable focused on trade and investment in Chile. The general director of ProChile, Jorge O’Ryan, the director for Latin America of CJR Renewables, Nuno Carvalho, the director of new business from REN, João Pedro Pires, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, ambassador António Martins da Cruz and, finally, the Chilean entrepreneur and innovation specialist, Felipe Contreras-Hayes. In this round, Chile’s favorable economic and political conditions for foreign investment were exposed, which create opportunities for Portuguese companies, particularly in the renewable energy and new technologies sector, areas in which Chile stands out worldwide.

The last panel brought together Chile’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrés Allamand, the Secretary of State for Internationalization of Portugal, Eurico Brilhante Dias, and the president of IPDAL, Paulo Neves. At this last table, topics such as the potential of Portugal-Chile cooperation were discussed and, with representatives from both governments present, what has been done and what remains to be done in order to intensify these exchanges. Several common points were identified in the commercial agendas of both, which translate into business opportunities, since, according to the president of IPDAL, “there is no continent in the world more similar to Europe than Latin America”.

The IPDAL-Vista Alegre Award was also awarded to SEGIB’s Director of External Relations, ambassador María Salvador Ortiz, for all her work together with IPDAL, in order to strengthen transatlantic ties.

The VI Ibero-American Meeting of Cascais was co-organized by IPDAL, Cascais City Council and SEGIB, with the support of BBVA, CJR Renewables, REN, COSEC, BID, Iberia and Grupo Azevedos.
