The President of the Institute for the Promotion of Latin America and the Caribbean (IPDAL), Paulo Neves, gave an interview to Diário de Notícias in which he addressed Portugal’s strategic role in the Latin American and Caribbean space, within the framework of the institution’s 20th anniversary.
In the interview, Paulo Neves highlighted that Portugal has been strengthening its interest and engagement in the region, stressing the importance of deepening political, economic, and cultural ties between the country and Latin American and Caribbean nations. This position, he noted, is part of a broader geopolitical context in which Portugal seeks to assert itself as a bridge between Europe and the Global South.
The IPDAL President also stated that this strategy is not limited to traditional commercial or diplomatic relations, but equally values cultural, academic, and social cooperation initiatives, reinforcing Portugal’s presence across multiple spaces of international dialogue and collaboration.
The conversation with Diário de Notícias also addresses the current challenges and opportunities of transatlantic relations and the way in which IPDAL works to consolidate sustainable and mutually beneficial partnerships, both at governmental level and within civil society.
Through this interview, IPDAL reaffirms its commitment to promoting an active and lasting Portuguese presence in Latin America and the Caribbean, grounded in cooperation and in the building of bridges that foster shared development opportunities.
