JAVIER MILEI NEW PRESIDENT OF ARGENTINA

Javier Milei won the second round of the presidential elections in Argentina with 56% of the votes, defeating the incumbent Minister of Economy, Sérgio Massa, who obtained 44% of the votes.

The economist will assume the country’s presidency during the biggest economic crisis in recent decades. Argentina currently has inflation of 140% and almost half of the population (around 40%) currently lives below the poverty line. In his victory speech, the next president of Argentina promised that he will be able to get the country out of the serious situation it is going through.

Despite his little political experience, Milei’s victory shook the establishment political. The candidate calls himself “liberal-libertarian” and “anarcho-capitalist” and his proposals as president include the dollarization of the economy through “free currency competition”, the elimination of the Central Bank and the drastic reduction in the size of the State, through the elimination of ministries, public works and privatization of state-owned companies.

Milei is the leader of the Partido Libertario Argentino and the La Libertad Avanza coalition, an alliance between the Right and the radical Right created in 2021 with the aim of participating in the legislative elections of that same year and the presidential election of 2023. This is a coalition with conservative trend on social issues and libertarian on economic issues.

The inauguration of the new President of the Argentine Republic is scheduled for December 10th, with a four-year term.
