Ivan Gonçalves holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Biological Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, as well as a postgraduate degree in Business Management from the Lisbon School of Economics and Management. He currently serves as a Councillor at Almada City Council.

He was Secretary-General of the Socialist Youth and a Member of the Portuguese Parliament for eight years, during which he served as Vice-President of the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group and took part in, among others, the Standing Committee of the Assembly of the Republic, the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities, the Committee on Constitutional Revision and, as an alternate member, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

He served as President of the Almada Municipal Assembly, was one of the Portuguese representatives in the “Young Elected Politician” programme of the European Committee of the Regions, and is President of the General Assembly Board of the Portuguese Association for European Studies.

He worked as a Consultant for the World Bank and in companies in the energy, education, science, and innovation sectors. He was also President of the Students’ Union of Instituto Superior Técnico, President of the General Assembly of Almada Atlético Clube, and a member of the General Council of the Academic Federation for Information and External Representation, the organisation representing Portuguese higher education in the “European Students’ Union”.
